Parks Plan to Introduce "Disc Golf" to Junpero
Serra Park, Leading to Park Visitors Concerns
of the Resulting Envirionmental Impact
At the Parks Commission Board Meeting of
June 5, 2014, Disc Golf was added to the draft
budget for the coming year. This will be
considered by the Board of Supervisors on June
17th.
Disc Golf's impact is seen as having clear
potential to damage the park environment. In
San Francisco, SaveMcLarenPark.org tells of
their 9 year fight to prevent a disc golf course
from harming that park.
Consider the current uses at the park:
- Picnic Areas
- Parking for picnic areas
- Nature trails throughout the park
- Childrens' play equipment area
- Boy Scout campground
How does a sport like golf, football or baseball
fit in with raptors, birds, grassy meadow slopes,
oak tree and redwood forests? Not very well with
frequent damage to the trees and other wildlife.
As stated by San Mateo County, Junipero Serra County Park has
a diversity of habitats: (SEE MAPS BELOW ON THIS PAGE).
The park has 106 acres of meadows, hills, trees and grasslands.
This open space is now used by visitors for hiking, picnics,
resting and playing. From the top of the park you can see all
over the San Francisco Bay Area.
To find the park, use the Crystal Springs Exit from Hwy 280
southbound, or the San Bruno Avenue Exit from Hwy 280
northbound. The park is next to Millbrae and San Bruno. The
address is 1081 Crystal Springs Road, San Bruno, CA 94066.
You can reserve a picnic spot, or use "Open" tables that are in
most areas of the park. The reservations number is
650-363-4021.
Rich with natural features, there are eucalyptus, live oak,
Monterey cypresss, madrone, horsetail and more. Wildlife
includes red-tailed hawks racoons, banana slugs, local birds such
as robins, bluejays and towhees, and there are sometimes
sightings of the Great Horned Owl, deer, foxes and coyotes.
